With a size of 19.5 square miles, the city of Camarillo has a population of over 65,000. It was incorporated in 1964 and gets its name from Adolfo and Juan Camarillo who were local farmers and horse breeders in the mid 1800’s.
The city was mainly an agricultural area as late as the 1940’s, with lemon, orange, and walnut groves in abundance. The construction of the Oxnard Air Field to the west of town during World War II brought growth to the area as did the Point Mugu Naval Air Station and other naval facilities. The site of California State University, Channel Islands used to be Camarillo State Hospital. Built in the 1930’s for those suffering from mental illnesses and tuberculosis, the hospital was closed in the 1990’s.

However, a waiver may be granted if certain circumstances warrant it.
