Until its incorporation in 2002, Goleta was the largest unincorporated, populated area in Santa Barbara County. The population is estimated to be around 30,000 in just under 8 square miles, although a large unincorporated but developed area between Goleta and Santa Barbara that is often considered part of the city.
Originally primarily an agricultural area of lemon groves, there are also large areas that were developed as oil and natural gas fields. The area received one of the few direct attacks on the US mainland during WWII when it was shelled by a Japanese submarine.The name of the city came from a “goleta” or “sailing ship” that sank in the area in the late 1700’s with the wreckage remaining visible for many years.
