Sometimes known by its self-given moniker of “Shangri-La”, the city of Ojai is located in the Ojai Valley northwest of Los Angeles. It was incorporated in 1921 and currently about 7,500 people occupy its 4.35 square miles. Although it was originally called Nordoff, it was renamed Ojai in 1917. Depending who you ask, this name was taken from a Native American word for either “nest” or “moon”.
Whatever its name origin, the city is a tourist destination filled with boutique hotels and shops, spiritual retreat offerings, art and design studios and galleries, and many recreational opportunities. You won’t find any chain stores, however, as these are prohibited by city ordinance.
