The city of Santa Barbara is situated on a south facing section of California coastline between the rugged Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The city has a population of over 90,000 within its 19.5 square miles, although when combined with the contiguous urban area around it the population rises to around 220,000.
Around 8,000 to 10,000 Chumash Indians were living in as many as five villages when the first European settlers arrived in the 1500’s. The Santa Barbara Mission was built in the 1780’s and was the center of life in the area. In 1812 it was destroyed by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1. The resulting tsunami carried a ship half a mile up Refugio Canyon and destroyed much of what the earthquake had not. The mission was soon rebuilt and is the best preserved of the California missions today.
Other attractions in and near Santa Barbara include Stearns Wharf, Santa Barbara Zoo, the Channel Islands National Park and Marine Sanctuary, and the Presidio of Santa Barbara. The city is also home to the University of California at Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara City College, Westmont College, and Antioch University.
